நியூசிலாந்துக்கு அருகே தெற்கு பசிபிக் கடல் பகுதியில் உள்ள சிறிய தீவு நாடு டோங்கா (Tonga).இந்த நாட்டின் கடற்பரப்பில் கடலின் அடியில் உள்ள எரிமலை ஒன்று நான்கு நாட்கள் முன்பு வெடித்து குமுறி எரிமலை குழம்பை பீய்ச்சியடித்தது.அந்த வழியாக கப்பலில் சென்ற ஆய்வாளர்கள் குழு எடுத்த வீடியோ இங்கே.
நான் 1979-ஆம் ஆண்டு "மஞ்சரி' இதழில் படித்ததை "துக்ளக்' வாசகர்களுடன் பகிர்ந்துகொண்டு, மனதைத் தேற்றிக்கொள்கிறேன்.
காரைக்குடி முதல் வகுப்பு பெஞ்ச் மாஜிஸ்ட்ரேட் கோர்ட்டில் நடந்த சம்பவம் இது: போலீஸ் சர்க்கிள் இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் சாந்தப்பிள்ளை என்பவர், தனது வீட்டிலிருந்து வேலைக்குப் புறப்படும் சமயம், அவரது வீட்டுத் திண்ணையில், அவருடைய மனைவிக்கும் தயிர்க்காரிக்கும் சுவரில் தயிர்க் கணக்கு கோடுகள் போட்டிருந்ததில் பிரச்சனை. சுமார் 20 கோடுகளைக் காணவில்லை, அவை அழிக்கப்பட்டது என்று
தயிர்க்காரி சொல்ல, அதற்கு இன்ஸ்பெக்டரின் மனைவி, தான் யார் என்பதைத்
தெரிந்து பேசு என்று மிரட்டிக்கொண்டிருந்தாள்.
அந்த சமயத்தில் இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் வெளியே வருவதைப் பார்த்த தயிர்க்காரி, பயத்தில் பேசாமல் சென்றுவிட்டாள். போலீஸ் ஸ்டேஷனுக்குச் சென்ற இன்ஸ்பெக்டர், ஒரு கான்ஸ்டபிளை அனுப்பி, அந்த தயிர்க்காரியை ஸ்டேஷனுக்கு அழைத்து வந்து விசாரித்தார். தயிர்க்காரி, நடுக்கத்துடன் நடந்த விஷயத்தை இன்ஸ்பெக்டரிடம் முறையிட்டாள்.
உடனே அந்த தயிர்க்காரியிடம் ஒரு வாக்குமூலம் வாங்கி, நேராக கோர்ட்டிற்குத் தானே சென்று, தனது மனைவியின் பேரில், தயிர்க்காரி கொடுத்த வாக்குமூலத்தைக் கொண்டு வழக்கு தாக்கல் செய்தார். மறுநாளே வாய்தா போடச் சொன்னார். மறுநாள் தனது மனைவியை கோர்ட்டில் ஆஜர்படுத்தி, குற்றத்தை ஒப்புக்கொள்ளச் செய்தார். கோர்ட் விதித்த அபராதக் கட்டணமான பத்து ரூபாயை, தன் மனைவியிடம் கொடுத்துக் கட்டவும் செய்தார்.
இச்சம்பவம் நம் தமிழ் கூறும் நல்லுலகில்தான் நடந்தது. சுமார் 112 வழக்குகளில் தொடர்புடைய வக்கீல்கள், சுப்ரமணியம் ஸ்வாமி மீது முட்டை வீசியதும் இந்தத் தமிழகத்தில்தான் நடந்துள்ளது.

During the late '40s of the last century, at the height of the Telengana movement, one of the junior practitioners of my father's bar was arrested for supporting the Communists. My father was a sworn enemy of the Communists. However, the Junior was the son of his closest friend and my father had no option except to defend him. His first task was to bring him out on bail. The judge who heard the bail plea was sympathetic and he asked my father to get an undertaking from the junior that he did not subscribe to the Communist ideology. My father went back to the junior and asked him if he was prepared to give such an undertaking. The junior refused and said he would rather remain in jail than give a patently false undertaking. My father went back to the Judge and his argument was this: The Junior would have chosen the easy option of giving a false undertaking to get out of the prison. He chose not to do so because he wanted to be truthful. Would it be fair to keep in prison a person who wanted to adhere to truth? Was not our National Motto 'Truth Alone Triumphs'?
The judge was impressed and the junior was released on bail. The junior went on to become one of the greatest criminal lawyers of the Madras bar.
My father and the junior were lawyers of a different era.
